Cryptocoryne wendtii

Cryptocoryne wendtii is one of the most popular and widely used aquatic plants in the aquascaping hobby, valued for its adaptability, durability, and natural appearance. Native to Sri Lanka, it is commonly found in slow-moving streams and shallow riverbeds, where it thrives in stable aquatic conditions.

This plant features long, lance-shaped leaves that range in shades of green and grow from a rosette formed by a creeping rhizome. Reaching a height of approximately 20–25 cm (8–10 inches), it is well-suited for midground placement or foreground use in larger aquariums. Its compact growth and lush appearance make it a staple in a wide variety of aquascaping styles.

With a moderate growth rate, Cryptocoryne wendtii is easy to maintain and adapts well to different water parameters. It performs well in low to medium lighting and does not strictly require CO₂ supplementation, making it an excellent choice for low-tech setups. A nutrient-rich substrate enhances root development and overall health.

Like other Cryptocoryne species, it may undergo “crypt melt” when introduced to new environments, but it typically recovers and regrows once acclimated. Its resilience and ease of care make it ideal for beginners, while its variety of forms and colors also appeal to advanced aquascapers.
