Eleocharis vivipara

Eleocharis vivipara, commonly called viviparous hairgrass, is an elegant and distinctive aquatic plant valued for its fine, grass-like appearance and unusual method of propagation. Native to tropical and subtropical regions, this species stands out by producing tiny plantlets at the tips of its leaves, which eventually detach and root in the substrate—giving it the name “viviparous.”

Unlike smaller carpeting hairgrass varieties, this plant grows taller and is better suited for midground to background placement, where its long, flowing blades create a dynamic, natural effect. It is especially popular in nature-style aquariums for adding movement and a soft, wild aesthetic.
